[00:00:01] Hello and welcome to Tal Paul's preaching. Episode 19 is titled John 9. [00:00:10] I was blind, Now I see. [00:00:14] In this episode, we explore those who are blind physically or spiritually. [00:00:20] In this sermon, we take a close look at the Gospel of John, chapter nine, where a man born blind receives his sight and explore why the who is way more important than the how a person can now see. [00:00:41] All right, well, let's pray. Definitely. [00:00:45] Lord, we come before youe humbly, Lord, and we look to youo to open our eyes so that we might see the truth of the light of your word, that we might grow in you, grow in our relationship with you, Lord. We also pray for all the fallen people, spiritually and physically, Lord, here we pray that accidents just pass us by, that you would hold us up, Lord, and keep us from falling. [00:01:16] And Lord, I just ask that your Holy Spirit would fill us all, that we would have ears to hear, and that your Word would speak to our hearts and change our lives. [00:01:28] I pray all of this in Jesus name. [00:01:32] Amen. [00:01:36] Well, today we're going to be going through John, the gospel of John 9, so you can open your Bibles to John chapter 9 and follow along if you desire. [00:01:51] In John 9, it's the story of the man that was blind from birth, whom Jesus healed. [00:02:01] And as usual, I'll start with a little joke to get us going. [00:02:07] A blind man was sitting on a park bench, and a rabbi, he sat next to him. The rabbi was eating some matzah bread, that's that grainy, unleavened bread that they eat at Passover. [00:02:23] And taking pity on the blind man, the rabbi, he gave him a big piece of this matzah, you know, and he put it in the blind man's hands that was sitting next to him. And after a little while, a couple minutes later, the blind man turns and says, who wrote. [00:02:50] It was hard to find a good blind joke, Let me tell you. [00:02:56] Well, let's talk about the blind before we get into the text. [00:03:01] This man that we're going to. [00:03:03] The whole chapter nine is devoted to this blind man. [00:03:08] He was born blind, and so he had never experienced sight in his life until Jesus came along. Of course. [00:03:19] Now he could feel things like faces or people, and he could hear. [00:03:26] But it is so hard. He had to kind of give shape to things of how they would look in his mind. [00:03:36] But how could he comprehend things that he could never touch, like. Like the moon and the stars, or if he heard a bird singing, he would never be able to touch that and experience that he could never fathom the beauty of a scenic mountain reflected in the water of a lake. [00:03:59] And he never experienced color. I mean, just imagine never knowing what color was. [00:04:07] And they say a picture paints a thousand words. [00:04:12] However, there's no amount of words that can describe sight to a person who couldn't see. They could never understand. [00:04:22] No amount of words could describe a smell to someone who had never experienced smell. I mean, how can you even explain that to them? [00:04:33] It can't be done. [00:04:35] And as we read from John 9, it's going to be helpful to keep in mind that we were all born blind. [00:04:44] We are all born spiritually blind, meaning we're born with a soul and a spirit, but it was disconnected from God and his spirit as a result of the sin of Adam. [00:05:00] Now we're all born with the soul and spirit, but it's empty without God. [00:05:07] Just like a man with eyes who cannot see. [00:05:11] We who have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior, we have been given new life. [00:05:17] And we can now have spiritual sight and a connection to God through the Holy Spirit. [00:05:25] It's like a whole new sense to us. [00:05:28] And no amount of words can allow someone who has rejected God to see spiritually as we see. [00:05:37] It can't be done. It requires God to open their spiritual eyes. [00:05:44] Those who are physically blind, they don't know what they're missing. You know, it's unimaginable, it's incomprehensible. And as we read, we'll find out that this blind man, he didn't even know it was possible to see. He didn't even ask Jesus to have him see. [00:06:03] He didn't even seek that out. Didn't know it was possible. [00:06:09] Now, the spiritually blind, they don't know what they're missing either. They can't comprehend the true spiritual connection that we have with God. [00:06:23] They're blind to that. [00:06:25] And all they can do is they can guess or make up what is spiritual. [00:06:31] They'll say, oh, it was an eagle soaring over the shores of the ocean. Or trees or bunnies or ghosts or goose pimples or whatever. They'll just turn anything into spirituality. [00:06:50] But they're blind, and so they're disconnected. [00:06:55] Now, the physically blind, they're lonely. They really are. You know, his sight, this blind man's sight given to him by Jesus, allowed a whole new connection. [00:07:08] It was unimaginable to see a face as it speaks words or as someone is discussing a little lamb over here, to actually be able to look at that opens a whole new level in communication. [00:07:25] And blindness disconnected him from the world who uses sight as a given. [00:07:31] We're so naturally dependent on being able to see that we don't even know what blindness is. [00:07:39] And the spiritually blind, they're lonely too. [00:07:43] They're not in communication with God. [00:07:47] They're not in communication with other brothers, sisters of the Lord through the Holy Spirit. See, salvation adds not just a new line of communication with God, a connection, but also a whole new family to communicate with. [00:08:05] Brothers and sisters in the Lord. [00:08:07] Once saved, a whole new world is seen. [00:08:11] And it's almost unimaginable to remember what it was like before we were saved. [00:08:17] So the gospel of John 9, let's go through that. Verse 1. It says, and as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from birth. [00:08:29] And his disciples asked him, saying, master, who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? [00:08:38] And Jesus answered, neither has this man sinned nor his parents. But that the works of God should be made manifest in him who sinned. [00:08:51] That was their question. [00:08:53] And that was the culture thing of the time, to blame everything on sin. You know, they would stub their toe, oh, that must be sin. Or they'd lose their sheep, oh, that must be sin. You know, when something went wrong to them, it meant that there was sin in the camp. That's just how they were. [00:09:12] But the reality is, as Jesus explained in verse 3, we all sin and good and bad comes upon us regardless of sin. [00:09:23] But God loves us so much that regardless of whether we've sinned or not, God is good. [00:09:31] Jesus wasn't saying that neither the blind man nor his parents had ever sinned. We've all sinned and come short of God's glory. [00:09:40] It's just that his blindness wasn't a result of their sin. [00:09:46] Jesus said the blind man was born blind so that God's glory and perfect power would be unveiled. It would be revealed to the world. The man was born blind so that people would see Jesus for who he was. [00:10:04] Verse 4. I must work, Jesus continued. [00:10:08] I must work the works of him that sent me. While it is day, the night comes when no man can work. As long as I am in the world. I am the light of the world. [00:10:20] Jesus is that light by which we can see God. [00:10:26] The world is dark and dying as we witness every day. It's like a rotting log, decaying. [00:10:34] But all things are possible with God. God is always at work. [00:10:39] He is in control. [00:10:42] Jesus tells us that it was good that he would leave us so that we could have that Holy Spirit with us forever. [00:10:50] Verse 6. [00:10:52] When Jesus had thus spoken, he spit on the ground, and he made clay out of the spit. And he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. And he said unto him, go and wash in the pool of Siloam, which by interpretation means sent. [00:11:10] He went his way, therefore, and washed and came seeing. [00:11:16] Amen. [00:11:18] It was not Jesus spit that healed the man. [00:11:21] It was not the method that was important. You see, in Matthew 9, Jesus touches a blind man's eyes and he can see. [00:11:31] And in Mark 8, he spit directly on the blind man's eyes. And he asked him if he could see. And he's like. Looks blurry, kind of like trees moving. [00:11:42] And so then Jesus touched his eyes. [00:11:46] And in Luke 18, Jesus healed the blind man without even touching him. I mean, he did nothing but speak the word. And so it's not the method Jesus we see there. [00:11:59] He sent the blind man, and the blind man obeyed. [00:12:03] By faith, I mean, someone tells you to go wash. It takes faith to go and wash your eyes. [00:12:11] And this blind man did, and he could see. [00:12:15] His life was transformed forever from that day. [00:12:19] His old life of begging is gone. It's over. He entered a new life. [00:12:26] Even though he now can see, we're still going to refer to him in this story as the blind man to make it easier to understand. [00:12:35] When we get saved, though, it should be the same for us. [00:12:38] The old way of life should be gone, and we have that new life in God. [00:12:45] Verse 8. The neighbors, therefore, and they which before had seen him that was blind, said, is not this he that sat and begged? And some said, it's him. And others said, he's like him. [00:13:00] But the blind man said, no, it's me. I am he. [00:13:04] People immediately noticed something's different now. He probably still had beggar's clothes on with stains, you know, because he couldn't see them. He didn't know he was probably unkempt, but people had seen him for his disability, not for the person he was. And so with his disability gone, he. His transformation was so radical that people didn't even think he was the same guy. [00:13:32] He's like, no, it's me. [00:13:36] And the transformation into the kingdom of God is just as radical, and people should take notice of that. [00:13:45] Therefore they said unto him, how were your eyes opened? He. He answered and said, a man that is called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said unto me, go to the pool of Siloam and wash. And I went and washed, and I received sight. [00:14:06] How was the wrong question they were asking How? But they should have just switched those letters around to ask who? [00:14:17] But the blind man answered it anyway. And he threw in the important answer of who it was Jesus. [00:14:26] Notice that he couldn't see. So he didn't even know that Jesus made the clay that he put on his eyes with his own spit. He just knew that it was clay. [00:14:37] Verse 12. [00:14:39] Then they said unto him, where is he? [00:14:42] And he said, I don't know this purple man. He's still never seen Jesus. [00:14:47] Jesus had him go and wash, and he went and washed. [00:14:50] He only knew Jesus by the sound of his voice. But he obeyed that voice. God's word. [00:14:57] His voice is calling to us all, and I hope we are all listening and obeying. Verse 13. [00:15:06] They brought to the Pharisees him that before was blind. [00:15:12] Why did they take him to the Pharisees? Well, Jesus answered that at the start of this whole thing it was for God's purpose. [00:15:19] Now the religious and political leaders, they seem to have the hardest hearts. And it takes a long time to get down in there. [00:15:29] Something amazing and miraculous was happening and occurring with this man. [00:15:35] But they couldn't see and they didn't want to see that. [00:15:38] Verse 14 and it was the Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. Oh boy. Oh no. It was the Sabbath. [00:15:50] They had put God in a box. You know, Jesus was Lord of the Sabbath. [00:15:56] The Sabbath was for man, not man. For the Sabbath. We weren't made for the Sabbath. [00:16:02] It was beneficial for this blind man to see. [00:16:05] Well, it wasn't work. All the guy did was wash and he could see. [00:16:11] Verse 15. Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. And he said unto them, he put clay upon my eyes and I washed and do see. [00:16:23] So the Pharisees noticed. They asked that how? Question again. [00:16:27] And the now seeing man responded with the same witness as he did before. [00:16:32] Verse 16. Therefore, said some of the Pharisees, this man is not of God, speaking of Jesus, who healed him because he keeps not the Sabbath day. Others said, how can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? [00:16:48] And there was a division, a fight among them. [00:16:52] Oh, there's that sinner word again. [00:16:54] What were they praying for on the Sabbath? You know, were they praying that God would work in their lives? Were they praying that God would change their lives? I mean, I don't understand how they didn't want God to work on the Sabbath. [00:17:11] Was it really work at all for God to heal this man on the Sabbath? [00:17:16] Verse 17 they said unto the blind man, Again, what do you say of him that he has opened your eyes and he said he is a prophet. [00:17:27] See, they're in this indecision. They're having an argument among themselves. And instead of looking to God's word for the answer, they're like, hey, the blind guy, what's your opinion on the matter? Which side of the argument are you going to take? [00:17:45] And he simply says, well, he's a prophet. [00:17:48] He told me to go wash. And I did. I went wash. Now I see. That's. That's what a prophet is. [00:17:55] And when we have a question about God and life, we should seek the word of God as well. [00:18:02] Verse 18. But the Jews did not believe concerning him that he had been blind and received his sight. Until they called his parents of him that had received his sight. [00:18:16] They're rejecting the truth that this guy had ever been blind. And they refused to see that truth. [00:18:24] Until they called the guy's parents before they come. [00:18:29] But they kept looking for an answer that would satisfy their own personal opinion. [00:18:35] Instead of changing themselves by the reality of the truth, they were looking to transform the truth to their vision of what it was supposed to be. [00:18:46] The disciples earnestly sought the answer from God and got them back. At the start, the Pharisees sought to build themselves up through other men. And they were left empty. [00:19:01] And they asked them, the blind man's parents asking, is this your son who you say was born blind? [00:19:10] How then does he now see? [00:19:13] His parents answered them and said, we know that this is our son and that he was born blind. [00:19:20] But by what means he now sees, we do not know. [00:19:25] And who has opened his eyes, we don't know. He is of age. Ask him. He shall speak for himself. [00:19:33] And these words spoke his parents because they feared the Jews. For the Jews had agreed already that if any man did confess that Jesus was Christ, that they should be put out of the synagogue. Therefore, his parents said, he is of age. Ask him. [00:19:52] Look out, it's a trap. [00:19:55] These poor parents of the blind man, he could now see. They can't even rejoice that he can take care of himself. He's probably still living with them. And. And as parents do, they've been taking care of this blind guy, the son, since his birth. [00:20:17] They are relieved of this burden now. But they are called before the Pharisees. And they can't even be happy about it. They have to try and explain, well, how did it happen, what took place Here they learn that he can see. [00:20:35] But you see that in that culture, in that day, the synagogue was everything to them. To be cast out of it was to lose your job, you couldn't work. It was their religion, it was their culture, their social gathering, it was their law. Everything ran through the synagogue and it was to lose everything to be cast out of it. [00:20:58] We should fear God. Not the rulers, the political, the religious. [00:21:04] We should fear God. [00:21:06] And the religious leaders, you notice they were still stuck on how he could see. [00:21:13] The parents don't know how or who. [00:21:16] The religious leaders had already determined in their heart they predetermined, despite the evidence that Jesus was not the Messiah, that they were looking for that, that he was not God the Son. [00:21:30] And they prove it with the next verse, verse 24. [00:21:34] Then again called they the man that was blind and said unto him, give God the praise. We know this man is a sinner. Speaking of Jesus now give God the praise. That was the equivalent of putting him under oath. That was like saying, by God as your witness, or by God, put him under oath. And they said that we know this man is a sinner. [00:22:02] Well, first of all, who isn't a sinner? [00:22:05] Well, this word is actually kind of a special. It's not your everyday normal, respectable sinner. [00:22:13] The word sinner here is only used in this chapter of John in the Gospel of John. It's used other parts of the Bible, but only in this chapter is it used. [00:22:23] It means devoted to sin or especially wicked. [00:22:29] But this is Jesus they're talking about. [00:22:32] What did Jesus do to deserve that? [00:22:36] How far off could they be? [00:22:39] Ooo, Jesus healed a blind man on the Sabbath. I mean, that's terrible. [00:22:45] Horrible. [00:22:46] How evil is that? [00:22:50] You know, when a person has no truth to stand on, they often just resort to name calling. [00:22:57] Hey, we see it, you are a racist, you are intolerant, you are whatever. They just have no truth to stand on. [00:23:04] The worst charge that they ever came up with against Jesus, the worst charge they came up with was he claimed to be God. [00:23:16] That is what they crucified him on. He claims to be God crucified him. [00:23:22] You know, I also noticed that they obviously didn't think that they themselves were sinners. They thought that they were above Jesus. [00:23:32] Verse 25, he answered and said, whether he is a sinner, I don't know. But one thing I know, that whereas I was blind, now I see this is a great witness, a proper witness that we should all have. [00:23:55] I don't know the details about God and you know how all the angels and demons and all that stuff work, you know, I don't know all that, but One thing I know. [00:24:07] I once was lost, but now I'm found. [00:24:11] I once was blind, but now I see. [00:24:15] That is a great witness. I am no longer spiritually blind. I am born again in Jesus, my Lord. [00:24:22] All I know is that I was headed for destruction and Jesus saved me. [00:24:27] Only God can heal and save us. Jesus saves. [00:24:32] Verse 26. [00:24:34] Then they said to him again, what did he do to you? How did he open your eyes? [00:24:42] They are still missing is not what or how, but who. [00:24:47] They were looking for a worldly explanation. They would have accepted magic or science. He put some certain type of salve in my eyes and that's how I can see anything. They were looking for anything except that Jesus did it. [00:25:05] Verse 27. He answered them, I have told you already and you did not hear. [00:25:11] Wherefore would you hear it again? [00:25:13] Will you also be his disciples? Oh man, that's some chutzpah with sarcasm. [00:25:20] The blind man is bold and he's learning what they're all about. And he knows they're not listening to him and are and rejecting the truth he's telling them. [00:25:28] Verse 28. [00:25:30] Then they reviled him and said, you are his disciple. But we are Moses disciples. [00:25:38] Boy, I will tell you, if Jesus healing me from being blind and giving me sight is so terrible, I will sign up for that. [00:25:47] I will be reviled for that. Verse 29. [00:25:51] We know that God spoke to Moses. As for Jesus, we don't even know from where he is. [00:25:57] They did not know who Jesus father was. He was born out of wedlock and they are denigrating him with that. [00:26:06] But it's sad. It's so sad. Because God was Jesus father and they're admitting we do not know God. [00:26:16] They relied on their connection to God to be through Moses, whom God did speak to. Moses wrote the first five books of the law. [00:26:27] But they could have had their own personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. [00:26:33] God speaks to all, not through someone else. [00:26:38] Our relationship with God shouldn't be through Moses or our family or friends, or even the church directly through Jesus. Verse 30. [00:26:48] The man answered and said unto them, why herein is a marvellous thing that you don't know from where he is. And yet he has opened my eyes. [00:27:00] Now we know that God hears not sinners. But if any man be a worshipper of God and does his will, him he hears. Since the world began, it was not heard that any man open the eyes of one that was born blind. [00:27:13] If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. [00:27:18] Marvelous. [00:27:21] Kind of a dig at the religious experts there, it's just more great testimony from the blind man. [00:27:29] The blind man saw the Pharisees for who they are and chose Jesus. [00:27:35] Jesus is the who? Jesus is the answer. Most don't seek God directly, and they. They let others do it for them. [00:27:44] The blind man is wise. [00:27:47] Our physical condition has no indication of how intelligent we are. Or our heart doesn't have any indication of how spiritual we are connected with God. [00:28:02] I looked up through the Bible and I couldn't find any others who were born blind that, that God had made see. [00:28:10] And I'm sure this blind man knew it. I mean, he would know. [00:28:16] Jesus did many things never done before to prove who he was. [00:28:22] And there's that story of John the Baptist. And John the Baptist sent two of his disciples to Jesus. And he said, are you the Christ? Are you the Messiah that we're looking for? [00:28:33] And in the hour that John the Baptist had sent these disciples and they are with Jesus. [00:28:38] During that hour, Jesus healed the blind and he healed the weak, and he raised the dead and he did all these miracles and he said, go and show John the Baptist these things that I have done. [00:28:53] So they went and they told John the Baptist. [00:28:56] And that was to be the indication that Jesus was who said he was. He was the Messiah. [00:29:04] And these religious leaders, the Pharisees, they should have recognized who Jesus was by what he did. Verse 34, they answered and said to him, you were altogether born in sin and you teach us. And they cast him out. [00:29:24] They did not believe the blind man's witness, and they used their own worldly wisdom to answer the disciples question. Back in verse two, they cast the man out. He was rejected of the world. [00:29:37] And we got to ask ourselves, are we of God or are we of the world? [00:29:43] The world loves its own. [00:29:45] The Pharisees, they were blind. [00:29:48] They still couldn't answer the question of who healed the blind man. [00:29:55] They did not want to see because if they knew who, their sins would be forgiven. [00:30:04] They conclude with this. We know you were born in sins, and that is why you cannot see. But they do not even want to recognize that he can see. Now it is crazy when someone comes through a surgery or goes to the doctor and they come out, well, we didn't ask, hey, what kind of scalpel did that guy use? Or was it a blue light or a yellow light or a white light or what's that stethoscope you used? No, we want to know the doctor's name. That's the important thing we want to know who was that we went and saw and were healed. [00:30:46] We're all born sin. We need Christ. And it is not what can I do to go to heaven? Or how can I get better? No, what can make me closer to God? Or how can I change? How can I do better? [00:31:02] Pilate even asks, what is truth? No, no, no. It is who is truth, Who. It is not what I do, it is who I know. [00:31:15] Christianity is not a religion. It's a relationship with the whom the Christ. [00:31:22] 35:35. Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said unto him, do you believe on the Son of God? [00:31:31] Notice Jesus is the one who seeks us out. He asked the blind man, do you believe in the Messiah? The Christian verse 36. And he answered and said, who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? [00:31:47] Ding, ding ding ding ding. Finally we have a winner. [00:31:51] Who is he, Lord? [00:31:54] Finally the right question. [00:31:57] Verse 37. And Jesus said unto him, you have both seen him and it is he that talks with you. [00:32:05] Right there. Jesus claims the right to the title of Christ Messiah. [00:32:11] And he said, lord, I believe. And he worshipped him. [00:32:17] Oh, salvation by grace through faith, lest any man shall boast. [00:32:23] Jesus accepts the worship as God. There is only one God and only those who allow worship are claiming that place. [00:32:32] Verse 39. [00:32:33] And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world that they which don't see might see. And they which do see might be made blind. [00:32:45] And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words and they said unto him, are we blind also? [00:32:52] And Jesus said unto them, if you were blind, you should have no sin. But now you say, we see, therefore your sin remains. [00:33:03] There are two types of blind people. [00:33:07] Those who can't see and those who won't see. [00:33:11] And these Pharisees were the ones that just wouldn't see. [00:33:17] Judgment and justice is blind. [00:33:22] God and the law, they are not a respecter of persons. [00:33:28] It doesn't matter who you are or how high you have climbed in society or how low you are, all must accept Christ Jesus. Is that judgment. [00:33:42] I think it was easier for the Old Testament saints to say, I am waiting for the Messiah and I will accept him when he appears. [00:33:52] I think it's a whole different thing to have the Messiah before you and you have to make that decision. Because see, Jesus was not who they wanted him to be. [00:34:03] He was not like them. Jesus was not exalting them for being so religious and law abiding. Jesus only exalted God. [00:34:14] It's not like choosing off of a menu. It's not like saying, okay, I want a burger and I want pickles and onions, but I don't want lettuce and I don't want mayo. [00:34:27] When we accept Christ, we don't pick and choose what we want to accept from Him. [00:34:33] It doesn't work like that. [00:34:36] Jesus, he taught some very hard things, like love. [00:34:42] And they asked him, well, who should we love? [00:34:45] And Jesus says, well, love your neighbor. So they asked, well, who is my neighbor? [00:34:50] Jesus says, everyone, even your enemy, is your neighbor. And you need to love them. That is a very hard thing for them to understand. [00:35:01] Sometimes religion is easier. [00:35:04] Do this, don't do that, and they can follow the rules. [00:35:08] That is what they were doing with the story of the Good Samaritan. [00:35:12] The priest wasn't supposed to be in contact with the Samaritan, so he crossed to the other side of the road. No, no. Jesus is saying, you know, gotta love him. [00:35:24] Religion is man's attempt to reach God. [00:35:28] Christ is God's attempt to reach man. [00:35:33] Jesus is telling them at the end there, if you've got it all figured out, there's no need for Jesus. [00:35:41] And if we can't do it on our own, we need Jesus. And boy, do we need Jesus. [00:35:48] Apart from God, we can do nothing. [00:35:53] Praise God for all he has done so that we see the truth and be in the light with God. [00:36:04] Let's pray. [00:36:05] Lord, I thank you that yout've done all the work, Lord, that Jesus paid the price. [00:36:13] He went to the cross willingly and sinless and bore my shame and my beating and died for my sins. And Lord, being sinless, he was raised on that third day. Oh, that glorious third day. [00:36:31] What joy, what accomplishment, what glory you have taken on. Lord, I pray that we all see that and recognize that and just rest in that. [00:36:47] That your grace given to us is how we can get to heaven through the whom, through Jesus Christ. [00:36:57] Lord, we just ask that you would continue to bless us and that we would grow in you. [00:37:02] We pray all this in Jesus name. [00:37:07] Amen. [00:37:11] Thank you for listening to this message. [00:37:14] We hope you enjoyed it. [00:37:16] Our prayer is that the message, in some way or another, helped in your walk with God and that your relationship with God was strengthened and grew more intimate.
